SUMMARY:Exercise Testing and Prescription by Physical Therapists Across All Settings: A Centennial Approach
DESCRIPTION:Faculty:\nLawrence Cahalin\, PT\, PhD\nEllen Hillegass\, PT\, EdD\, CCS\, FAPTA\nSandra Billinger\, PT\, PhD\, FAHA\nSherry Osborn Pinkstaff\, PT\, PhD\nJames Moore\, PT\, PhD \nDescription:\nA renewed interest in exercise testing by physical therapists is occurring and resulted in a well attended educational session at CSM 2020. At this session\, a number of factors related to safe and effective ET were reviewed\, including (1) the history of ET by non-physicians including PTs\, (2) training in ET for PTs\, (3) assessment of competency in ET\, (4) assessments performed before\, during\, and after ET\, and (5) interpretation and dissemination of ET results for diagnostic\, prognostic\, and rehabilitative purposes. \nThe results of the above session and information presented stimulated requests from many in the audience to offer a course on ET to improve one’s understanding of ET methods and the interpretation of ET results as well as methods to assess competency in the administration and supervision of ET. Thus\, this course will address methods to administer\, interpret\, disseminate\, and utilize ET results to prescribe exercise. \nThis day-long course will address each of the above factors with a superb faculty and focus on moving forward the role of PTs in ET to facilitate the rehabilitation of clients/patients with and without disease. This is course applicable to a large audience of PTs from all specialty areas. \nObjectives:\n* Understand the history and safety of ET by PTs and non-physicians.\n* Appraise the training and assessment of competence needed for safe and effective ET.\n* Appraise the assessments needed before\, during\, and after ET to ensure safe and effective ET and the methods to interpret and disseminate ET results for diagnostic\, prognostic\, and rehabilitative purposes.\n* Understand methods needed to move ET by PTs forward.\n* Discuss the appropriate exercise test for specific populations based upon case studies. \nOutline:\n* Introduction and clinical relevance (5 min).\n* Indications\, Contraindications\, and Risk Factor Assessment for Exercise Testing and Tests of Exercise Tolerance (30 min).\n* Normal Cardiovascular and Respiratory Response to Physical Exercise With Different Modes of Exercise and Protocols Including Test Termination Criteria (30 min). \nFunctional Performance Measures with highlights of specific tests that were prerecorded include: \n\nSix-Minute Walk Test.\nShuttle Walk Test.\nTimed Up And Go Test.\nIllinois Agility Test.\nYo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test.\nFunctional Capacity Eval/ Return to Work Test.\nNuStep Testing.\nOverview of Functional Performance Measures Question & Answer Period.\nStandardized Exercise Testing for neurologically impaired patients.\nQuestion & AnswerCase discussion: Optimal utilization of testing for different patient diagnoses in different settings.\nStandardized Exercise Testing by PTs.\nCardiorespiratory Exercise Testing by PTs.\nExercise Testing by PTs – Moving Exercise Testing in Physical Therapy Forward.\nPre professional exercise testing competencies and post professional exercise.\nSummary of the Session and Questions & Answer Session.\n\nPRE-RECORDED:\nCompetency in Physical Therapy – Implications for Exercise Testing and Tests of Exercise Tolerance (20 min) –– Pre-Recorded. \nActual videos of exercise tests – Pre-Recorded: \n\nShuttle Walk Test.\nTimed Up And Go Test.\nIllinois Agility Test.\nYo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test.\nFunctional Capacity Eval/ Return to Work Test.\nNuStep Testing.\nNaughton Protocol standardized exercise test.
